NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Dallas Greeson took an oath to protect and serve even if it meant putting her life on the line. Now her life is on the line, not because of crime, but lung cancer. She called 10 On Your Side last fall after half her right lung was removed. Shortly after the new year, the mother of two teenagers returned to duty.
“Everything’s going really well. All things considered, I am doing really well. I’m alive and I’m beating this cancer the best way I know how,” Greeson said.
Greeson is back on the job but not back on the streets. In early march she will undergo another operation that should restore her voice.
While the recovery continues, the nonprofit organization, Paint Pink, is hosting Pancakes with the Norfolk Police. It is a stack of sweet fun to support Greeson and other first responders who are fighting cancer.
“We’re having a huge pancake buffet, so we’ve got pancakes, we’ve got eggs, and we have bacon,” said Kim Keene, founder of Paint Pink and a survivor of metastatic breast cancer. “We’re doing biscuits and gravy, fruit, a donut bar. Of course, we have to have that. There’ll be Bloody Marys and Mimosas, and coffee. We’ll also have crafts for kids.”
Greeson, like many officers, relied on part time security jobs to help make ends meet. But because of the lung cancer surgery, at this time, she can’t wear the uniform that includes body armor.
Pancakes with the Police, which takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the VFW at 111 A View Ave., is your opportunity to bridge a gap. Detective Joann Hughes is a member of Paint Pink’s board.
“I think it’s really important for the community to get behind nonprofit organizations that help all our first responders,” Hughes said.
