ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — A woman was impaired when she accidentally struck and killed her husband with a car overnight in Elizabeth City, police say.

Police say they responded to the crash around 2:24 a.m. at the intersection of White Street and Walston Avenue, and found the victim, 43-year-old Jermaine Calvin Major, underneath an Acura sedan.

Elizabeth City Fire Department and EMS crews worked to free Major and save his life, but he was pronounced dead.

Police determined Major’s wife, 44-year-old Tyisha Louella Major, was the driver of the car and that she was impaired at the time. She’s been charged with driving while impaired and felony death by motor vehicle.

She’s currently at Albermarle District Jail under a $50,000 secured bond and had a court appearance scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Pasquotank District Court.

Court documents state Tyisha “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did unintentionally” caused the death of her husband, and that the impaired driving was the proximate cause of death.

Neighbor Diana Hernandez told 10 On Your Side the news shocked her.

“When you said it, I was like ‘what, really.’ I mean I’ve heard things before but that, killing your husband that late?”

However, she said the area is no stranger to crime.

“Well, this area, I heard that I lived in the ghetto area and there was a shooting Saturday in that corner over there. But I’d only seen cops pulling up, I didn’t really see anything else.”

She said she won’t let the crime force her into moving.

“Regardless of where you are, there’s always going To be things that surprise you. You could be in a really good place, and something could still happen.”

No other details have been shared in the case, but police say it’s still under investigation.
