HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Rosie’s Gaming Emporium opened its doors in Hampton on Tuesday morning.
A grand opening event was held at 11 a.m., then the new business opened for anxious customers ready to check it out.
The Hampton location in the Power Plant Complex off I-64 features 700 Historical Horse Racing terminals, which were just legalized in Virginia last year. There’s also a restaurant and a cocktail lounge.
Sheryl Boone got in line two hours before the opening.
She says it’s good because it gives people in the community something to do without having to travel very far. She also won over $300 on Tuesday.
“I love gambling and I just ran here, nobody else would answer my call this morning and I came from Chesapeake through the tube just to get this plus more,” she smiled holding up at $100 bill.
Just around the corner at another machine was Marvin Hall, who wasn’t as lucky, but says he’s happy a Rosie’s opened up here.
He says he used to go up to Colonial Downs, but this is closer.
“A lot of people don’t go anywhere hardly, most of us some older people and with something this close they will participate,” Hall said.
This is the company’s fourth location. The other Gaming Emporiums are in Richmond, Vinton and at the Colonial Downs track in New Kent.
The new location in Hampton will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.
“We’ve been able to create 200 jobs in the community, this will also bring a tax implication of $2 million annually and it will also represent $7 million in tax revenue to the commonwealth,” said Rosie’s Hampton General Manager Vincent Jordan.
Hampton’s new $40 million gaming venture, owned and operated by the Colonial Downs Group, is projected to create around 200 jobs in Hampton and generate approximately $2 million in annual tax revenues for the city.
