CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2024 football schedules for its member institutions on Wednesday. Virginia will play six home games and open the season at Scott Stadium on Aug. 31 against Richmond. Start times for all contests and home games designated for Homecomings and Family Weekend will be announced at a later date.
In addition to the season opener, Virginia will host Maryland (Sept. 24), Boston College (Oct. 5), Louisville (Oct. 12), North Carolina (Oct. 26) and SMU (Nov. 23). The Cavaliers will play six true road games beginning with ACC opener on Sept. 7 at Wake Forest. UVA will also be on the road to play Coastal Carolina (Sept. 21), Clemson (Oct. 19), Pitt (Nov. 9), Notre Dame (Nov. 16) and Virginia Tech (Nov. 30).
Schedule Notes
- Nine of Virginia’s 12 opponents in 2024 played in a bowl game last season – Boston College (Wasabi Fenway Bowl), Clemson (TaxSlayer Gator Bowl), Coastal Carolina (EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl), Louisville (DIRECTV Holiday Bowl), Maryland (Transperfect Music City Bowl), North Carolina (Duke’s Mayo Bowl), Notre Dame (Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl), SMU (Wasabi Fenway Bowl) and Virginia Tech (Military Bowl).
- The combined 2023 record of Virginia’s 2024 opponents is 94-62 (.603).
- Once former ACC foes, UVA and Maryland played for the first time last season as non-conference opponents. The Terps will play at Scott Stadium for the first time as members of the Big Ten after they exited the league after the 2013 season. The Cavaliers have faced a Big Ten opponent in five of the last seven seasons.
- Virginia will play Coastal Carolina for the first time in program history. The two teams were scheduled to play at Scott Stadium in 2022 but the game was canceled after the tragedy on Nov. 13, 2022, that claimed the lives of UVA football players Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry. The two schools are scheduled to play in Charlottesville on Aug. 30, 2025.
- Virginia and Notre Dame will play for the fifth time. The Fighting Irish handed UVA its first loss of the 2019 season after a 4-0 start in the last meeting. It will mark the second meeting between the two schools at Notre Dame Stadium. Virginia is slated to play Notre Dame on the road again in 2026.
- Virginia will play Clemson for the first time since the 2020 season. It will mark the return of Fralin Family Head Coach Tony Elliott who spent 11 seasons on staff at his alma mater, most recently as the offensive coordinator. The two teams played in the 2019 ACC Championship game in Charlotte. Virginia is seeking is first win at Clemson since 2001.
- SMU, Cal and Stanford join the ACC in 2024. Of the newcomers, Virginia will only play SMU this season. The two programs were scheduled to meet for the first time in the 2021 Fenway Bowl before it was canceled due to COVID19 issues.
- The Commonwealth Clash with Virginia Tech will be the 105th meeting between the two schools. Virginia will play in Blacksburg for the first time since the 2020 season.
