CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A new traffic shift is in place as work continues to expand the Deep Creek Bridge in Chesapeake.

The new shift started Friday, January 19, and prohibits left turns from northbound George Washington Highway onto Moses Grandy Trail toward the bridge. Drivers can only make a right turn onto Moses Grandy.

There’s no timeline for when the shift will end, but the first phase of the overall $60 million project is expected to continue through March 2024. Ultimately, the bridge will go from just two lanes and 20-feet wide to five lanes and 60-feet wide when it’s fully complete in summer 2026.

The current bridge is still in use as the Army Corps of Engineers build the new south span.

Drivers in the meantime are encouraged to take alternate routes to avoid the congestion at the bridge, including the High Rise Bridge and Veteran’s Bridge.
