HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in an overnight shooting.
Police said they responded to the report of a shooting just around 12:50 a.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of Aberdeen Road, just outside of Aberdeen Elementary School.
After a preliminary investigation, police determined that the shooting occurred nearly two miles away in the 1500 block of Briarfield Road.
Police say the suspect approached the victims on Briarfield Road and displayed a firearm. When the victim tried to flee, the suspect then fired his gun at the victim’s vehicle and struck both victims. The victims then traveled to Aberdeen Road to seek assistance, according to police.
One of the victims, later identified as 19-year-old Jesse Tidwell, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, who police say is also 19 years old, was transported to a local hospital with what appears to be a non life-threatening injury.
There is no suspect information to release at this time. The shooting remains under investigation.
10 On Your Side crew at the scene observed a red car parked on school grounds, near Aberdeen Park, during the investigation. Police were taking pictures of the vehicle that had its driver and passenger side doors open. The vehicle was towed shortly after.
This is the 13th homicide in the City of Hampton so far this year.
A spokesperson with Hampton City Public Schools told 10 On Your Side that Aberdeen Elementary will be observing a normal instructional day.
Police continue to investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
