Before we get to your Traffic in the News headlines, here’s a list of closures that may impact your commute.

Construction & Closures

Depending on where you’re heading, you’re likely using a major highway, tunnel or bridge. With that in mind, these major construction updates or notifications are organized by road or structure. If it’s not a full/continuous closure, or it’s happening in the 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. timeframe, we won’t make a written mention of it. 

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64:

  • Thursday, February 16 – All stop I-64 east at Mallory Inspection Station from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Wednesday, February 15 – All stop North Island I-64 east from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Continuous Lane Closures and Detours
    • Friday, February 10 through Friday February 17 – (24 hours per day)

      • Closure and detour of W. Bay Avenue on-ramp to I-64 east. CLICK HERE to read the traffic alert for the W. Bay Avenue detour (includes map)

I-664, Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel

  • Alternating, single-lane closures southbound Feb. 18 starting as early as 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., including brief, intermittent stoppages starting at 11:59 p.m.

South Military Highway, Gilmerton Bridge

  • Starting the weekend of Feb. 17, Chesapeake’s Gilmerton Bridge will be closed during the overnight hours for six weekends in a row. 
    • The closure schedule is as follows:
      • Friday, February 17, 9 p.m. – Monday, February 20, 5 a.m.
      • Friday, February 24, 9 p.m. – Monday, February 27, 5 a.m.
      • Friday, March 3, 9 p.m. – Monday, March 6, 5 a.m.
      • Friday, March 10, 9 p.m. – Monday, March 13, 5 a.m.
      • Friday, March 17, 9 p.m. – Monday, March 20, 5 a.m.
      • Friday, March 24, 9 p.m. – Monday, March 27, 5 a.m.

I-64, Express Lanes: 

  • Full closure in both directions:
    • Feb. 13 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    • Feb. 13-16 from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.

I-64, Norfolk:

  • Double-lane closures, including brief, intermittent stoppages, on I-64 west near Chesapeake Boulevard (exit 279) Feb. 11 from 11:59 p.m. to 7 a.m.

I-64, Newport News:

  • Full closure of the on-ramp from Fort Eustis Boulevard east to I-64 east Feb. 16-17 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-264, Virginia Beach:

  • Full closure of the on-ramp from Independence Boulevard north to I-264 west Feb. 13-16 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Full closure of the off-ramp from I-264 east to Independence Boulevard north (exit 17B) Feb. 13-17 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-64, Chesapeake:

  • Overnight, single-lane closures on I-64 east at the High Rise Bridge Feb. 13-17 beginning as early as 7 p.m. until 5 a.m., with brief, intermittent stoppages (up to 20 minutes each) between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.
  • Motorists should anticipate a temporary shift in traffic on I-64 west near Battlefield Boulevard (exit 290) in which the collector-distributor (CD) lane will be shifted slightly to the right beginning as early as Feb. 11.
  • Overnight closure of I-64 west off-ramp to Great Bridge Boulevard (exit 292) Feb. 13-14 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Overnight closure of off-ramp from I-64 east to George Washington Highway north (exit 296A) Feb. 13-14 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Overnight closure of on-ramp from George Washington Highway south to I-64 east Feb. 13-14 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Overnight ramp closure on I-464 south to I-64 east (exit 1B) Feb. 14-15 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Continuous closure of I-64 west ramp to Route 168 south/Chesapeake Expressway (exit 291B) beginning as early as 11 p.m. on Feb. 17 through 5 a.m. on Feb. 20.

Quarterpath Road, Williamsburg

  • Monday, Feb. 13
    • The dirt portion of Quarterpath Road, from near Battery Boulevard to Redoubt Park, will be closed until early spring. Use I-64, South England or Battlefield Boulevard.
