PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A preliminary investigation into a fatal, single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 264 westbound in Portsmouth indicated that speed was a factor, Virginia State Police said.

VSP confirmed the crash happened just after 1 p.m. at the Greenwood Drive exit.

The westbound exit 2B was closed as police investigated the crash. It reopened around 4 p.m.

A preliminary investigation showed that the driver of a 2006 Ford Escape, Tyana Charine Perry, 19, of Portsmouth, took the exit ramp at a high rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road, rolling over into a tree, Virginia State Police said.

Perry died upon impact due to the injuries suffered in the crash, state police said.
