NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A suspect wanted in connection with an early Tuesday morning homicide in Newport News was found dead Friday afternoon in North Carolina.

Newport News Police say the suspect, 37-year-old Karlos Evan Andrews, was found dead by suicide in Durham, North Carolina. Police said he was found in a car in a parking lot in the 600 block of North Alston Avenue, which is an elementary school.

Durham Police in North Carolina confirmed that Andrews died from a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.” Police also added that it did not appear to be suspicious.

He was wanted in connection with the death of 49-year-old Loren Javell Ransome. On Tuesday, Newport News police confirmed that Andrews and Ransome were siblings.

According to police, Andrews opened fire at the Jackpot Hooka Lounge in the 15300 block of Warwick Boulevard around 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Following the preliminary investigation, warrants were obtained on Andrews for first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a felon, and shooting a firearm in a public place.

At the time of the shooting, it was the 24th homicide this year in Newport News – which is seven more than this time last year.

The investigation is ongoing.
