VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Flooding is a persistent problem in parts of Virginia Beach and soon residents will have an opportunity to vote on a referendum pertaining to this issue. The city is holding a series of informational meetings with residents to discuss a proposed flood protection program.

The program will be up for a vote on the November 2 ballot.

If voters approve the referendum, the city would increase the real estate tax to fund flood protection projects.

“This is one of the most important initiatives for the City and it will have a major impact for generations to come,” said Mayor Robert M. “Bobby” Dyer. “We want to ensure that citizens have all the information they need to make an informed decision.”

The city has scheduled a virtual citizen information meeting on Saturday, October 16 at 10 a.m. via WebEx. Community members can join here.

In addition, they will be holding an in-person meeting on Monday, October 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Central Library on Virginia Beach Boulevard.

Previously, they held an event on September 30.
