VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash on I-264 in Virginia Beach that sent five people to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the crash occurred around 2 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-264, near First Colonial Road. They say a 2020 Dodge Challenger was traveling at a high rate of speed and struck a 2008 Ford Escape in the rear.

The impact caused the Challenger to run off the roadway, overturn, then strike the jersey wall. The vehicle then went over the guardrail and into the woodline. All three passengers suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police also say that two passengers of the Escape suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver was also hurt, but not seriously.

The crash closed all lanes in both directions, however, all lanes were reopened at 7:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
