‘God is going to see us through this’: Family grieves after 22-year-old fatally shot Sunday in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) — Police in James City County are investigating a double shooting on Sunday night that left a man dead and another injured.

Police say the shooting happened around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Alesa Drive and Carriage Road. 22-year-old Diamant’e Malik Brown, of York County, was taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A 22-year-old James City County man was shot in the leg and had already been taken to Sentara Williamsburg before officers arrived to be treated for the wound, which was not considered life-threatening.

On Tuesday, police arrested Naieveo Alidro Hairston, 42, in connection with this shooting. He was arrested at a motel in Newport News following a barricade situation.

Hairston is charged with the use of a firearm in commission of a felony (2 counts), malicious wounding, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, murder and robbery.

The case is still under investigation.

Around noon on Monday, James City County police investigators were waiting to interview a possible witness at Ironbound Park. 10 On Your Side didn’t want to spook the witness, so we left before they showed up.

Before that, we visited 22-year-old Diamant’e Brown’s home he shared with his mother and grandmother.

His mother, Tina Brown agreed to speak with us in front of the home.

“If you were at the hospital Sunday night, there were hundreds of kids out there. He was amazing,” she said.

Diamant’e Brown graduated from Jamestown High School in 2017.

“This was his graduation picture,” she said holding a picture of Diamant’e Brown flanked by his mother and grandmother. “This is my baby. That was one of my happiest days of my life. I had my son when I was 17, and I worked really hard to take care of him and give him everything he needed.”

He went to Chowan University in North Carolina, and played for the Hawks.

“He brought me so much joy when he played basketball, and I was at every single game. Being a single mom, his dad was in the picture, but we weren’t together,” she said.

Diamant’e Brown already knew tragedy. He lost his 5-month-old daughter in December. His mother says one day she just didn’t wake up,

“He was devastated, it crushed his whole world. My son was an excellent father. He was always a mama’s boy… when it came to his daughter, he showed a whole different person. He could do everything for his daughter, bathe her, he was wonderful when it came to her,” he said.

The death of his daughter brought Louie into Diamant’e Brown’s life. His mother called the new dog a therapy dog for her son.

“That dog showed him so much love, like I just felt he needed it, and I wanted him to have it,” she said.

Sadly, man’s best friend couldn’t protect Diamant’e Brown on Sunday night.

His mother remembers when she first heard the news.

“It was around 9 p.m. I knew he was with his cousin together, and both of them got shot. My son didn’t survive,“ she said.

Now, the best of times is what she chooses to remember.

“What stands out to me is when Jamestown went to the state championship, and he was a part of it,” she said.

For now, Tina Brown is left empty, but she has faith that gives her peace.

“This has devastated me. I only had one child. God makes no mistakes, and God is going to see us through this,” she said.
